|Skill||Skill 7: Empathic Concern|
How well did the facilitator lead the group and create a safe space? Please explain and give examples.
He did an excellent job maintaining a safe space. He invited everyone to share and responded in a non-judgmental way. He asked questions to guide people to their own conclusions rather than dominating the conversation or advancing his own agenda.
How well did the facilitator explain this Skill using the PowerPoint presentation? Please give examples.
The facilitator did an excellent job of using the images in the presentation to encourage conversation and exploration.
From a content perspective, the facilitator could have done a better job clearly articulating the sun and Earth metaphor. The most important purpose of this metaphor is to explain that impartiality is not the same as apathy or being neutral towards everyone. We are not seeking to reduce our feelings for our loved ones to a lowest common denominator. Instead, we are elevating how we appreciate and value others. In the same way. the sun shines impartially, but at different times of the day and year, some places on the Earth will be closer to the sun than others. They, therefore, benefit from it more than others. Similarly, although we ultimately want to cultivate impartiality towards all people, there are people who are closer to us and will naturally benefit from our love and compassion more than others.

What aspects of this Skill did you think the facilitator did exceptionally well? Please give examples.
He did a really good job of allowing people to come to their own conclusions about the material by asking very good guiding questions, as opposed to telling them what the concepts or images mean to him.
How well did the facilitator lead the Contemplative Practice in this Skill? Please explain and give specific examples.
What aspects of this Skill could the facilitator improve? Please give examples.
He could have done a better job using the sun metaphor. This could have been a lack of preparation, lack of understanding of the material, or poorly worded explanation in the CIT materials.
Although he was not told how much time to take for his sections, so this may not be an issue, his wonderful style of facilitating (as described above) could lead him to run long. This would just be something to watch out for when he is leading his own groups.
